Honi. To Kss; A Kiss; A Hawaiian Greeting

Formerly to touch noses on the side in greeting.

"The honi is a Polynesian greeting in which two people greet each other by pressing noses and inhaling at the same time. This is a very honorific as this represents the exchange of ha--the breath of life, and mana--spiritual power between two people. This act and the concepts behind it are very unusual to western audiences and care should be taken to explain the spirituality and sacredness of this simple act of greeting."

Renee Bishaw, Hawaiian Greeting/Protocol

"In ancient times Hawaiians greeted each other by touching each other at the bridge of the nose (honi) therefore "experiencing and exchanging the breath of life". The coming of the foreigner (white man) and the hand shake as a greeting created the word "ha 'ole" meaning without the breath of life)"

Source: Sam Monet

"The ancient custom of honi when meeting another included touching foreheads together, inhaling, kissing the other on the cheek or lips, hugging and then exhaling. It is said that this custom enabled the ancients to detect who visited their homes hours after they left by the distinctive body odor of that person. We've also read that the kiss used to be on the lips but changed to the cheek or eliminated when the tuberculosis epidemic hit Hawai`i. "

Kindy Sproat & hânai (adopted) son, Josh, on honi:

"Interviewer (Hal): After a few tunes we start talking about all sorts of things Hawaiian. I'm curious about that Island word, aloha, emblazoned on everything from beach bags to jumbo jets.

Josh: "It's a real powerful word, even though they use it a lot. It's like the direct translation is 'may you have ever-lasting breath.' Yeah, and so that's a real deep meaning that the Hawaiians use. That's why when they came up to say aloha, they did their honi which is a nose-to-nose thing so they could breathe in each other's breaths."

Hal: "So when you came to someone, you put your nose against theirs and breathed?"

Josh: "Yeah, forehead and nose. It's the ancient Hawaiian greeting that they used, called the honi. Kind of the Hawaiian kiss."

Kindy: "Exchange of breath."

Hal: "So you don't take aloha very lightly."

Kindy: "Aloha is a very serious word and if you don't mean it, don't say it. You see, alo is of deity. It's like a forward call to deity. Ha is the breath of life and it goes way down in."

Josh: "Actually, the translation of Hawaii is ha-vai-`i...the breath of life and the water of life...of I the creator. They named this whole thing that 'cuz it was so beautiful and luscious and they had everything they needed to survive." "

The customary way to welcome or congratulate someone is to present him or her with a lei, a garland of flowers (or other decorative items) strung together and worn around the neck. One puts the lei over the recipient's head and if the relationship is close, gives the recipient a honihoni or a kiss. Lei are especially appropriate for high school and college graduations, birthdays etc. Children often appreciate candy or money lei. It is considered bad luck to throw a lei away. When the lei is no longer wearable, some people cut the string and cast the individual flowers into the ocean. Others may hang the withering lei somewhere inside or outside the house. A lei is love, and one doesn't throw away love.

Lei Greeters in Hawaii

Greeting newcomers to Hawai`i with a lei and a kiss seems to have started sometime around World War II. A U.S.O. entertainer was dared by her fellow musicians to kiss a homely officer sitting in the audience. She was hesitant to kiss him outright, so she presented him her leis with a kiss and announced to the crowd that this was a Hawaiian custom.

The Wedding Toast

The venue and caterer have been booked for months. The band is lined up. The photographer is ready. Everything for the wedding seems to ready, Or is it? The groom just remembered he has to give a toast. The bridesmaid is afraid of speaking in public. The mother of the bride keeps crying on her notes and ruining them. And Uncle Johnny doesn’t know the difference between a toast and, well, a piece of toast.

Anyone who helps plan weddings is all too aware of the embarrassment that can be caused by a series of poorly executed speeches. Thankfully, Hawaiian Island Weddings can help. We have some classic quick toasts that can we used by the Groom to his Bride, or the Bestman or Bridesmaid to the Couple, see The Wedding Toast page.

Famous Guests That Have Stayed At The Royal

After visiting the Royal Hawaiian Hotel, Mary Pickford and Douglas Fairbanks wrote in their syndicated travel column, that Honolulu "was the most beautiful place in the world".

Since that time, the Royal has played host to numerous celebrities, financiers, politicians, heads of state and other notables. Curly topped Shirley Temple created a stir strumming the ukulele on Waikiki Beach when she visited the Royal in the 1930's. Even President Franklin Roosevelt found the charm of the Royal hard to resist when he visited Hawaii.

A more contemporary guest list includes Kevin Costner, William Defoe, Rosanna Arquette and many others. Although honored by the attention of its celebrity clientele, The Royal Hawaiian takes great pride in extending gracious service to each and every one of its special guests.

The Beach Boys

The fun loving beachboys at The Royal Hawaiian were a popular fixture at the hotel. The beachboys not only introduced guests to the myriad of beach activities that Waikiki had to offer, but lifelong friendships were often formed.

A rousing game of surfboard polo always attracted attention on a crowded day at the beach. It seems guests could not get enough surfing lessons or riding the waves on outrigger canoes. Surfing with sails was a popular pre-war sport. This, no doubt, was the start of today's popular sport of windsurfing.

As visitors continue to be lured to Hawaii by the tropical weather, sun and surf, nowhere does this combination meld as perfectly as at The Royal Hawaiian Hotel, the Hotel on Waikiki Beach.
